The Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana was created in 2006 as a response to the institutional desire of providing this autonomous community with the cultural infrastructures that best represent it. Its essential aim is to unite Valencian musical tradition and to gel the international character of its main venue, the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía situated in the Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències of the Valencian capital.
From its beginnings, the Valencian Local Government set the transformation of the new orchestra into a musical ambassador of the current dynamic Valencian and Spanish symphonic panorama as an objective. The Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana has the essential mission of attending to the orchestra pit during the opera season of the Palau de les Arts, although its functions also include developing the symphonic repertoire and the music of the chamber, which will be performed by its teachers in seasons that are programmed in the various concert halls that the Palau de les Arts accommodate. The maestro Lorin Maazel is the permanent conductor and, as such, has been involved from the very beginning in the creation of the orchestra. In this way, a symphonic group of great personality has been created, which is capable of facing the most demanding symphonic and operatic challenges.
During its opening season, the orchestra has dealt with scores that are as technically and artistically delicate as The consecration of the spring, by Igor Stravinski; the Second Symphony, “Resurrection”, by Gustav Mahler; The Sea by Debussy, or the first two titles of the Tetralogy, by Richard Wagner. The strictly Valencian repertoire is ever present in his repertoire. In his first season, he will perform the works of César Cano, Ruperto Chapí, Óscar Esplá and Vicente Martín i Soler, among other Valencian creators.
Since its origins, the Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana has also been very closely tied to the maestro Zubin Mehta, who will conduct it in the Palau de les Arts in operatic productions as well as in symphonic music programmes. Just as the maestro Lorin Maazel has done, the maestro Mehta has kept close relations of collaboration with the Palau de les Arts from its very beginnings.
In addition to the normal activity which the Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana has to carry out in the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía, it also plans to go on concert tours which will include other parts of Spain and abroad. |
