Lieder and songs by Fanny Hensel, Alma Mahler, Ferenc Liszt, Mélanie Bonis, Marguerite Canal, Claude Debussy
The light soprano voice of Sabine Devieilhe, with its brilliant high notes and impeccable coloratura, is ideally suited to roles such as Ophélie in Hamlet, Zerbinetta in Ariadne auf Naxos (La Scala), Sophie in Der Rosenkavalier (Vienna, La Scala) and the title role in Lakmé. She has built a broad and intelligently chosen repertoire ranging from the Baroque (Bach, Händel, and Rameau) and Mozart through to the 20th century. In this recital she showcases her luminous crystalline voice in tribute to women composers denied recognition within a musical world dominated by men. Audiences will discover lyrical treasures from Romanticism and post-Romanticism in the Lieder of Fanny Hensel —Felix Mendelssohn’s sister— and Alma Mahler, alongside the purity of mélodies composed in the finest French tradition by Mélanie Bonis and Marguerite Canal.
