Centre de Perfeccionament

The Centre de Perfeccionament del Palau de les Arts (Opera Studio del Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía) aims to provide high-level professional training for young singers and musicians from Spain, the European Union, and the rest of the world; to prepare operatic singers in a comprehensive and structured way, and to maximise their successful entry into the profession.

To this end, during the training period, members of the opera studio immerse themselves in the day-to-day life of the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía, take part in the activities scheduled each season, and work closely with the artists involved. Over two consecutive seasons, the new cohort of singers and pianists develops its interpretative style with María Bayo as musical advisor.

Members of the Centre de Perfeccionament develop their interpretative style, delve into the musical and dramatic nature of the characters and the operas, and deepen what is essential for any singer: the sense of expression, gesture, the intention of the word, and its theatrical nature. They embrace the fundamental importance of the libretto, dramaturgy, and the historical context of each opera—its influences and consequences, etc.

For this reason, its members often join the casts and productions scheduled at the Palau de les Arts, both those promoted by the Centre de Perfeccionament itself and those in the subscription season. In this way, they come into direct contact with the reality of the theatre, alongside leading singers and conductors—both musical and stage.

In addition to meetings and masterclasses with the artists involved in each season’s general programming at the Palau de les Arts (stage directors, music directors, set designers, costume designers, etc.), this opera studio also promotes exchanges with other international training centres.

Home venue

Its home venue is the Teatre Martín i Soler, a 380-seat auditorium within the Palau de les Arts, whose excellent acoustics allow for a wide range of activities, particularly small-scale opera as well as Baroque and Classical repertoire.

It is an ideal space in which to stage the Centre’s own productions and meet the audience. It also hosts masterclasses, meetings, and talks with artists who collaborate with the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía.

The Centre essentially pursues the comprehensive training of the artist and their approach to professional life, ensuring that all members have the opportunity to experience the inner life of the theatre first-hand and from a privileged vantage point.
