Prisoners of the Sun draws upon Verdi’s Luisa
Miller and the myth of Icarus to meditate on the illusions of
freedom that shape our lives. Each song becomes a mirror—revealing
the prisons we build for ourselves: those of love and resentment,
of comfort and repetition, of ambition and suffering.
The performance features Berklee Valencia students and a diverse repertoire ranging from Esperanza Spalding and Laura Mvula to Serge Gainsbourg, Talking Heads, Dodie, Billy Joel, and Manos Hadjidakis. Each song is uniquely arranged by the performers, featuring vocalists alongside saxophone, piano, bass, and drums.
The performance seeks not only to portray our unseen confines, but also to name them—to give shape to the invisible walls that bind us. In the light of the sun, we may begin to see that freedom is not the flight itself, but the courage to face its radiance and still return to earth unchanged.
