EL RETABLO DE MAESE PEDROManuel de Falla
A puppet opera based on a chapter of Part Two of Don Quixote,
arranged for chamber orchestra and singers.
Life is pure theatre, in all its confusionRecommended for ages 10 and over
Manuel de Falla wrote the music and libretto for this piece for puppets and humans in 1923, based on the story of the love affairs of Melisendra and her beloved Gaiferos, who fight to free her beloved from the captivity to which the Moorish king Marsilio submits her. Based on Chapter 26 of Part Two of Cervantes’ Don Quixote de la Mancha, the puppet theatre attended by the public and the wandering knight merges in the troubled mind of Don Alonso Quijano into an almost surreal synthesis between reality and reverie.
