Leonardo García-Alarcón gave us a “scorching and fascinating” version of L’incoronazione di Poppea with Cappella Mediterranea two seasons ago. This time, the Argentinian maestro, who is an expert in the music of Monteverdi, leads his ensemble and the Chœur de Chambre de Namur in the splendid score of L’Orfeo, which he turned into a “memorable event” when he conducted it at the Teatro Real. This time, in a semi-staged version, García-Alarcón unravels the extraordinary beauty and mystery of the score with singers including the Italian tenor Valerio Contaldo, one of the best current interpreters of Orfeo, and the Argentinean soprano Mariana Flores in the roles of Euridice and La Musica.
