Functional diversity takes center stage in Valencia's opera program

20.03.2019

The opera Iolanta portrays one of the most enigmatic figures in world opera. Tchaikovsky created an evocative character, a tragic heroine. Distraught as the curtain rises, the daughter of the King of Provence bids farewell to this passionate score brimming with love. This young woman has a disability , a condition that does not prevent her from living in a world of dreams.

Like Iolanta, though this time in the real world, various artists in similar situations are living true stories of overcoming adversity. Let's get to know some of these national and international icons through this princess of the Gallic mountains. They are exponents of classical and operatic music, as well as of popular culture. Let's travel first to St. Petersburg in 1892, the year the Mariinsky Theatre hosted the premiere of this musical drama.

This is how Tchaikovsky portrays the protagonist of the Opera Iolanta

The first Russian musician to achieve international fame received public acclaim for this composition. The composer of this work, included in the opera program in Valencia, felt he was moving away from innovation . Creating this story caused him more than a few headaches due to his stubbornness: he was convinced he was repeating himself. The success of *The Sorceress* was still fresh in his mind.

The reality was quite different. The story stirred the audience's emotions thanks to the illustrious protagonist of this fantastical tale. Iolanta was born blind , but no one has mentioned her condition to her. She isn't even aware that she possesses the privileges of a princess. Her fiancé, Robert, the Duke of Burgundy, also doesn't know that the young woman is unable to see the light.

A condition that is too demanding

A doctor reveals the good news to René, Iolanta's father: she will be able to regain her sight. But the king considers the condition too risky: first, his daughter must know her true state . Therefore, the monarch rejects the treatment, fearing that the young woman will no longer be happy.

Meanwhile, the protagonist falls in love, but with Count Vaudemont, who explains to her what colors are. He swears eternal love to her, but René discovers them. Overwhelmed with rage, the king threatens the lover for revealing the secret to Iolanta. However, the remedy works, and our heroine is finally able to see.

Artists with disabilities who are role models in music

In art, it was Frida Kahlo, and in science, Stephen Hawking. The Mexican artist contracted polio, and the astrophysicist was diagnosed with ALS at age 21. If we turn to the world of film, we find Michael J. Fox. The Back to the Future actor suffers from Parkinson's disease and is a living example of how disability doesn't stifle talent . And how, like Iolanta, one can be happy and make others happy, regardless of their limitations.

And in music? Which artists have overcome adversity to achieve success? Certainly, these five are among the most acclaimed:

1. Itzhak Perlman

This Israeli, born in the mid-1940s, plays the violin sitting down. The five-time Emmy Award winner needs crutches to get around . Like Kahlo, he contracted polio at the age of four, something that didn't hinder him from achieving his goals. In fact, his tenacity and his knowledge of the instrument have propelled him to success. Today, Perlman is recognized as one of the most acclaimed violinists of the second half of the 20th century.

His Stradivarius Soil has been his faithful companion since 1986. He has remained at the pinnacle of violin playing and continues to perform at the same level as in his youth. He has performed at countless festivals around the world and has been accompanied by the finest symphony orchestras . One of his most acclaimed concerts was, in fact, the one that served as a tribute to Tchaikovsky on the 150th anniversary of his birth.

We've also heard him in film. His musical talent graced the soundtracks of several Oscar-winning movies. He performed John Williams' score in the unforgettable Schindler's List . He did the same in Memoirs of a Geisha , alongside Williams and cellist Yo-Yo Ma.

2. Liu Wei

This thirty-something's story is truly inspiring. Who said you need hands to play the piano? This must have been what this young Chinese man thought when he lost his arms at the age of ten after suffering an electric shock . It was then that music became his salvation, his reason for waking up with enthusiasm.

His courage led him to become a marvelous pianist. However, he puts a twist on the technique we're used to seeing in recitals. In his case, it's his toes that keep the rhythm . His dexterity with his lower limbs allowed him to win the Chinese version of the famous show Got Talent at the age of 23. Shortly after, he received acclaim from audiences on a tour in Shanghai and in various performances in Las Vegas.

Since then, he hasn't stopped working for what he considers his lifeblood: music. Liu Wei proves daily that he has the same tools as everyone else to succeed. That is, his piano and his enormous willpower.

3. Adrián Martín

"I Won't Give Up" is the title of one of the albums by this young man from Malaga, born in 2005. It's a clear statement of intent. Despite having undergone several surgeries, Adrián hasn't given up on the microphone. His voice moves all who listen to him, as does his story.

The boy who took YouTube by storm a few years ago has hydrocephalus and a congenital malformation in his arms. He rose to fame at the age of nine, after a video of him and his sister was posted on the channel. He sang "Qué bonito " by Rosario Flores, a performance that garnered over three million views. Among those views were those of dozens of artists he admires who have performed with him, including Rosario Flores herself, Coti, Niña Pastori, and José Luis Perales.

His tenacity and artistry led him to a Latin Grammy nomination for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album in 2006. The young man narrowly missed out with his debut album, Lleno de vida (Full of Life ). "The dream continues. Maybe next time!" he declared at the time. And indeed, his dream continues.

4. Serafín Zubiri

His song "Pedaleando" became the theme song for the Vuelta a España cycling race in 1988. This song was part of the second album by the pianist and singer from Navarre. It gave a boost to the career of this blind artist who represented Spain at Eurovision in 1992 with his well-known song "Todo esto es la música ."

Zubiri not only has nine albums to his credit, but he has also demonstrated that there are no barriers for him in other areas. A true polymath, the pianist has presented television programs ( Vamos a ver ) and participated in others, such as ¡Mira quién baila! and El Conquistador del Aconcagua .

He has also tried his hand at the world of sports, running marathons and cycling races. Mountaineering is another sport in which he excels. He has summited Aconcagua, Kilimanjaro, and Mont Blanc . Scuba diving, canoeing, speed skating… Serafín Zubiri fears nothing. He instills his own passion in those who listen to his numerous motivational talks. No one is better suited to guide us in achieving our goals.

5. The Langui

Nothing can stop Juan Manuel Montilla, El Langui. He suffered a brain injury due to lack of oxygen during birth . But this didn't prevent the Madrid native from achieving success in the music world thanks to his talent. His rap group, La Excepción, won the Revelation Group award at the 2006 MTV Awards.

He has collaborated with artists such as Andrés Calamaro and Rosendo . He has also composed soundtracks for films like *Cobardes* and *El truco del manco *. It was precisely this latter film that earned him a Goya Award for Best Original Song . Not content with that honor, El Langui achieved a double victory at the 2008 ceremony. He won the award for Best New Actor , as he starred in this feature film by Santiago A. Zannou alongside Iván Morales.

His acting skills have led him to participate in other films. The Torrente saga, Brain Drain 2 , and May God Come Down and See are among them. We've also seen him in television series such as Órbita Laika and Pepe's Beach Bar . And it's in his book , How to Be a Happy Imperfect Person, where he unleashes his full motivational arsenal for overcoming any obstacle in life.

These are just a few examples of how disability is not an impediment to developing talent. The challenges these individuals face are, paradoxically, the driving force behind their success. And, as we have just seen, the world of music offers several such inspiring examples of overcoming adversity. Like Iolanta, they don't need to see or walk to captivate those who experience their art.
