William Christie makes his Les Arts debut with Mozart's 'La finta giardiniera' in a semi-staged version

06.11.2019

William Christie debuts at the Palau de les Arts with 'La finta giardiniera', by Mozart, this day, November 10, at 6:00 p.m. The Main Hall contains this unique function of the first comic opera of the Salzburg genius, which is performed in a semi-staged version.

The respected harpsichordist, orchestra director, musician and professor visits the arts center with the latest formation, Les Arts Florissants, which celebrates its 40th anniversary and is considered the "ensemble of reference" in the recovery and interpretation of baroque and classical music with antics instruments.

The distribution of the work is made up of soloists from Le Jardin des Voix, the singing academy for young artists of Les Arts Florissants, directed by William Christie and Paul Agnew. Mariasole Mainini (Sandrina), Lauren Lodge-Campbell (Serpetta), Deborah Cachet (Arminda), Théo Imart (Ramiro), Moritz Kallenberg (Il contino Belfiore), Rory Carver (Il podestà) and Sreten Manojlovic (Nardo) make up the cast. The second performance was, moreover, the only visit of the talents of Le Jardin des Voix scheduled to Spain in 2019.

Sophie Daneman directs this semi-staged version of 'La finta giardiniera', with scenery by Adeline Caron and costumes by Pauline Juille, which will debut this summer at the William Christie Festival in the Gardens.

'La finta giardiniera' marked the second foray of Les Arts this season into the Mozart repertoire after the success of 'Le nozze di Figaro', which will inaugurate 'Les Arts és Òpera'. Those interested in attending can purchase these locations at the theater box office, by consulting here and on the telephone sales line 961 975 900. Ticket prices range between 24 and 60 euros.

First comic opera

Mozart will compose with penises at 18 years 'La finta giardiniera', a comic opera in three acts with a book by Giuseppe Petrosellini. Premiered on January 13, 1775 at the Salvatortheater in Munich with great success, it is the first comic opera by the Salzburg genius.

Comèdia d'enganys, encounters and disagreements between three pairs with moments of great musical nobility. The action takes place in a story along the afores of Milà in the 18th century. To be in favor of his esteem, Count Belfiore, the Marchioness Violant Onesti decides to go to a young gardener, Sandrina, to look for work at the court of the 'podestà' of the hisenda. His criat Nardo pretends to be his germà.

Aquests and the three protagonists such as Arminda, the wedding of the 'podestà', the cavaller Ramiro and the maid Serpetta are submerged in a joyful chaos in three acts, in which all the couples of lovers have their own happy ending.

Le Jardin des Voix 2019

Le Jardin des Voix has become an unavoidable project both for the public and for programmers, who find in this space the quarry of young talents who are joining the international music scene, among them are Sonya Yoncheva, Llija Desandre, Marc Mauillon or Christophe Dumaux, who will be, at the beginning of the series carreres, els primers fruits d'aquest jardí florent.

On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of Les Arts Florissants, the ninth edition of Le Jardin des Voix has opted for the performance of the opera 'La finta giardiniera', written by an 18-year-old Mozart and, therefore, faces younger than these singers, who do not even reach the age of thirty.

For a program named 'El jardí de les veus', the choice of this “pretend garden” is not innocent, since it has continued to be created in the gardens of William Christie, in Vendée (France), in a semi-staged version signed by Sophie Daneman.

William Christie

Harpsichordist, conductor, musician and professor, William Christie is a pioneer in the rediscovery and introduction of French baroque music to the general public. Originally from Buffalo and trained at the universities of Harvard and Yale, his career took a decisive turn as he formed Les Arts Florissants.

As the leader of this group, in 1987 he achieved public recognition with the production of "Atys", by Lully, at the Opéra-Comique in Paris, a project followed by several other hits centered on the French and European baroque repertoire. Interested in delving deeper into the work with a trainer, William Christie, together with Les Arts Florissants, will create in 2002 Le Jardin des Voix, a biennial academy for young singers.

Les Arts Florissants

It is one of the most sol·licit baroque vocal and instrumental groups of the world. Founded in 1979 by William Christie, it specializes in the interpretation of period instruments and has played a pioneering role in the recovery of 17th and 18th century repertoire. Under the baton of William Christie and Paul Agnew, the group offers hundreds of concerts and opera performances at the most prestigious venues in the world.
