The Tristan und Isolde conducted by James Gaffigan this season leads the audience down the thorny path of Tristan and Isolde's passionate love, destined for a breathtakingly tragic end. This common thread also weaves together the works that make up Gaffigan's first subscription concert. The American maestro rescues from oblivion one of Óscar Esplá's early symphonic poems, El sueño de Eros (The Dream of Eros), based on a text by Gabriel Miró about the Greek myth representing desire and attraction. This is followed by the Symphonic Dances from West Side Story, Bernstein's famous score, romantic yet impetuous, about the impossible love of Tony and Maria. An unattainable love story, like that of the lovers of Verona, Romeo and Juliet, which Prokofiev immortalized in ballet with captivating music, built on innovative musical structures and enigmatic sounds.
