LOS ELEMENTOS
A harmonic opera in the Italian style
Anonymous libretto
Opera in concert version
The Sun against the Night,or futile battle against the established order
This Italian-style harmonic opera, presented in a private palace in Madrid in 1705, symbolises the new Bourbon order after the War of the Spanish Succession between the Hapsburgs and the Bourbons. The merits of the new monarchy shine through between the struggles of the natural elements that fight in this Spanish-language opera to establish themselves as the centre of cosmological power, using the best finery of Spanish verse, still reflecting the Golden Age, and the forms from the Italian opera, with distant echoes of Monteverdi.

Forma Antiqva occupies a special place among the Spanish ensembles specialised in the performance of ancient and Baroque music with historically informed criteria. Made up of the Zapico brothers, Aarón (harpsichord and conductor), Pablo (baroque guitar) and Daniel (theorbo), the group has recovered a wide variety of works from the 17th and 18th Centuries from oblivion, and given them their distinctive imprint of originality and quality. Among them, there is the Baroque chamber opera Los elementos, by the Majorcan-born composer Antonio Literes, who breathed an air of modernity into Spanish music by incorporating Italian developments. An entirely female cast made up of sopranos will give life to each of the elements.
