Introducción
MARIA STUARDA
Gaetano Donizetti
Opera en two acts
Libretto by Giuseppe Bardari
based upon Andrea Maffei’s translationof Maria Stuarda by Friedrich Schiller
Or how ambition can make you lose your mind
Giuseppe Bardari wrote the libretto for this opera, which skilfully plays with history and recreates its real-life characters dramatically. They were presented to the public at its premiere in 1835 wearing all the finery of those romantic and patriotic times. The drama of two women in love with the same man also serves to explain a moment in history when two family crowns faced each other in a final duel: the death of Mary of Scots by order of her cousin Elizabeth of England would unify the two kingdoms on Elizabeth’s death, making the son of Mary, James I, the king of a unified Great Britain.
In the second instalment of Donizetti's Tudor trilogy, co-produced by the opera houses of Valencia, Amsterdam and Naples, the Dutch stage director Jetske Mijnssen once more focuses her attention on theatrical action. The fears of Queen Elisabeth I, arising from the dreadful memory of her witnessing the fall of her mother Anne Boleyn as a child, are contrasted with those of her cousin Maria Stuarda, in a claustrophobic climate emphasised by the staging of bare and narrow rooms. Under the precise bel canto baton of maestro Maurizio Benini, the cast that reaped such formidable success in Anna Bolena, is reunited here, this time with the Italian soprano Eleonora Buratto debuting in the role of Maria Stuarda, set against the temperamental Elisabeth I of the Valencian mezzo-soprano Silvia Tro Santafé, together with the tenor Ismael Jordi.
