This opera recounts the love affair that ended with the death of Gustav III of Sweden at the hands of one of his closest friends. The libretto, inspired by Eugène Scribe's 1833 work, Gustave III, ou le bal masqué, served as the basis for Giuseppe Verdi's stylistically mature opera of 1859, which reflects on ethics in conflict with passionate love; on despair surrendered to superstition; on loyalty beyond injustice and crime. As on so many other occasions, censorship dictated that the Swedish royalty be kept out of the spotlight, and the historical and real event be transposed to a Boston populated by imagined characters who, nevertheless, retain in their traits the universal essence that so interested Verdi.
