PROGRAM
Gustav Mahler (1860-1911)
Symphony No. 2, in C minor, “Resurrection”
Philippe Jordan
Les Arts adds to its roster of guest conductors one of the most distinguished figures of our time, Philippe Jordan. Music Director of the Vienna State Opera over the past five seasons, he will assume leadership of the Orchestre National de France from 2027. Previously, he served as Music Director of the Paris Opera and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. His debut with the Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana marks his first concert conducting a Spanish orchestra. The highly sought-after Swiss maestro has chosen Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony, a fitting programme to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Cor de la Generalitat Valenciana. It is the score that best encapsulates the religious and metaphysical dimensions of Mahler’s music, as well as the composer’s most intimate emotions. The final movement is one of the grandest achievements in symphonic-vocal music: a sonic odyssey on the meaning of human existence, the Last Judgement, Resurrection —“Rise again!” sings the chorus in pianissimo from the distance— and the hope of Eternity, culminating in the orchestral and choral climax of the apotheotic “I shall die in order to live.”
