Vasily Petrenko
Vasily Petrenko maintains close ties with Europe’s leading orchestras, among them the Berlin Philharmonic and the Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig. He is currently Chief Conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. He began his collaboration with the Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana with a superb performance of Rachmaninov’s Symphony No. 2. Now he proposes a journey from the balanced and elegant Classicism of Mozart’s immensely popular Symphony No. 40 to the dense orchestration and broad palette of timbres, rich in motivic development, of Strauss’s symphonic poem Don Quixote. In the work, the Knight of the Sorrowful Countenance is portrayed through symphonic variations, with the cello assigned the role of the adventurous protagonist, in a display of virtuosity that elevates this late Romantic score to the level of a great concerto for soloist. For the occasion, Les Arts once again welcomes cellist Pablo Ferrández, who achieved overwhelming success last season with Elgar’s Cello Concerto.
