A total of 5,230 musicians from around the world have applied, across both auditions, to join the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía orchestra, whose public debut is scheduled for next October. This is the highest number of applicants to date for the orchestra's auditions.
The second call for applications, which closed on January 20, registered a total of 3,630 applications, far exceeding the first call, which resulted in a total of 1,600.
During February, the auditions for musicians who applied to the first call for applications will conclude, with only trombone, tuba, and percussion instruments remaining. Auditions for musicians who applied to the second call for applications will be held in various cities around the world to provide maximum convenience for candidates.
The creation of a world-class orchestra is one of the priority objectives set by the Board of Trustees of the Fundació de la Comunitat Valenciana Palau de les Arts, with the aim of achieving artistic excellence and having the most prestigious orchestra conductors from around the world.
The analysis of the data also highlights the number of Valencian musicians who have applied: a total of 635 between the two calls; 301 in the first and 334 in the second, which puts the Valencian Community at the top of the number of applications.
The United States leads in foreign applications
In the second round, the United States leads the number of foreign applications with a total of 629, followed by Italy with 308, France with 254, Great Britain with 183 and Germany with 145.
The Valencian Community leads the list of national musicians with a total of 334 applications (33.23% of the national total). Breaking it down by province, Valencia ranks first with 268, followed by Alicante with 39 and Castellón with 27. The Valencian Community is followed by Madrid with 52 applications, Catalonia with 40, and Andalusia with 36.
By instrument, the highest number of applications in the second call occurs in violin (736); viola (354); cello (379) and double bass (253).
Of the total applications received, 55.1% are from men and 44.85% from women. The Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía Orchestra will initially consist of 90 musicians. The opera house's management intends to prioritize, all other things being equal, the presence of Valencian musicians in the orchestra, in accordance with the Fundació Palau de les Arts' statutes, which aim to promote the culture and musicians of the Valencian Community. This intention is not incompatible with the desire to create an orchestra of the highest international caliber, given the rich and diverse Valencian musical heritage.
