Zubin Mehta and Matti Salminen were awarded today at the 2007 Campoamor Theater Lyric Awards in Oviedo in the categories of musical director and singer, respectively, for their performance in the inaugural opera Fidelio at the Palau de les Arts.
These are prestigious national awards intended for all Spanish and foreign artists who have performed in Spain during the year 2006.
In this second edition, a total of 220 applications have been submitted from 20 cycles of the main theaters, festivals and seasons with stable opera programming in our country, almost all of them integrated into the Opera XXI Association.
The jury, composed of leading music critics and experts from Spain, announced a total of 11 awards today. These include, in addition to the award given to the Palau de les Arts production of Fidelio, the prize for Plácido Domingo for his work in Operalia and the award for Carlos Álvarez as best zarzuela singer, among other accolades. The Palau de les Arts is the only theater to have received two awards in this 2007 edition.
At the awards ceremony, the winners will receive, along with their prize, a bronze statuette of "The Gypsy of Paris" by Sebastián Miranda, and a €12,000 award. The ceremony will take place during a gala concert at the Campoamor Theater in Oviedo at the end of June 2007, featuring the Oviedo City Symphony Orchestra and the Oviedo City Polyphonic Chapel Choir. Emilio Sagi will direct the gala, with set design by Luis Antonio Suárez and costumes by Pepa Ojanguren.
The objective of the Campoamor Lyric Theatre Awards Foundation is to grant annual awards that recognize the growing and solid activity, both opera and zarzuela, that is currently taking place in our country, and which is now being consolidated in its second edition.
