Valencia (1-12-09).- Filmmaker Mariusz Treliński is finalizing stage rehearsals for Puccini's famous opera Madama Butterfly at the Palau de les Arts, which will premiere on December 9.
Following the success of last season's Teatro alla Scala production in Milan, the Valencian arts center will program this year a production from the Teatr Wielki in Warsaw, directed by Treliński, who rose to fame in 1990 after his debut at the Venice Film Festival with Farewell to Autumn at just 28 years old.
Mariusz Treliński also boasts an extensive resume as an operatic stage director with titles such as Verdi's Otello, Mozart's Don Giovanni, Giordano's Andrea Chénier, Tchaikovsky's The Queen of Spades, Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov, Puccini's La Bohème or Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice.
The Polish premiere of this production attracted the attention of operatic luminaries such as Plácido Domingo and Valery Gergiev, who included and conducted the production at the Washington National Opera and the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, respectively. This time, Lorin Maazel, music director of the Palau de les Arts, will lead the Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana in a performance of the tragic love story between the young Japanese woman Cio-Cio-Can and U.S. Navy Lieutenant Pinkerton.
The young Ukrainian soprano Oksana Dyka will bring to life the famous fifteen-year-old geisha known as Madama Butterfly. Dyka, who has already performed the role of Cio-Cio-San to great acclaim at La Fenice in Venice, the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing, the Queensland Opera in Brisbane, Australia, and the Teatro Comunale in Bologna, burst onto the international operatic scene with her victory at the 2003 Marseilles International Opera Competition.
Ukrainian tenor Misha Didyk, who will sing the role of Pinkerton, has worked with conductors such as Daniel Barenboim and Gianandrea Noseda and sopranos of the caliber of Karita Mattila and Angela Gheorghiu. He will sing the roles on the 9th, 12th, 15th, 18th, 22nd, and 27th. The final two performances will be sung by Demos Flemotomos, winner of the second prize at the 2009 Operalia festival, where he also received the Zarzuela and Audience Choice awards. Marianna Pizzolato (Suzuki), Gevorg Hakobyan (Sharpless), Paul-Armin Edelmann (Yamadori), and Abramo Rosalen (Bonzo) complete the cast, which also includes singers from the Centre de Perfeccionament Plácido Domingo, Dolores Lahuerta and Lluís Martínez.
Madama Butterfly will be performed at the Palau de les Arts on December 9, 12, 15, 18, 22, 27, and 30, as well as January 3. Tickets can be purchased online at www.lesarts.com; by phone at 961 975 900, Monday to Friday, from 12:30 to 6:00 p.m.; at the Palau de les Arts box office, Monday to Friday, from 12:00 to 8:00 p.m.; or through Servientrada and Servicam.
