Valencia (07.05.10).- The Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía's production of Turandot opened the IX China Arts Festival yesterday at the new opera house in Canton.
Lorin Maazel, musical director of the Palau de les Arts, offered Puccini's famous score in the new auditorium of the eastern city - the third largest in China - designed by the Anglo-Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid, winner of the Pritzker Prize in 2004, and equipped with the latest stage technology.
The Guangzhou Opera House has a capacity of 1,800 spectators and occupies an area of 46,000 square meters. Chinese audiences can enjoy Turandot until May 9th.
This marks the third time in less than a year that Chen Kaige's acclaimed staging for the Valencian arts center has traveled to another opera house. The Palau de les Arts production was also featured in the 57th edition of the A Coruña Opera Festival in September 2009, and it opened the 2009-2010 Monte-Carlo Opera season with great success.
The recording of Turandot's premiere at the 1st Festival del Mediterrani, conducted by Zubin Mehta, is now available on DVD and Blu-ray. The Palau de les Arts production, distributed by Unitel and starring Maria Guleghina, Marco Berti, Alexander Tsymbalyuk, Alexia Voulgaridou, and Javier Agulló, has received excellent reviews from critics.
