Valencia (24-5-10).- The Auditori of the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía will host the world premiere of Qualia-Jardí blau by José María Sánchez-Verdú on May 29, commissioned by the Valencian arts center to the composer.

The Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana, the Cor de la Generalitat and the baritone Miquel Ramon and the clarinetist Joan Enric Lluna as soloists perform the score with Zubin Mehta on the podium.

Qualia-Jardí blau, according to Sánchez-Verdú, is “a poetic-musical cycle based on philosophy, Islamic and Jewish thought, and some texts by Ramon Llull.” The work has been composed for baritone, clarinet, choir, and orchestra. The baritone and clarinet embody the lovers from Llull’s Llibre d’amic e amat; the choir participates in their dialogues.

“Choir, clarinet and baritone - the author points out - with their questions and answers, create a poetic and musical garden in which the texts, the spatiality determined in the score, as well as the developments of the sound material and color create a journey, an itinerary.”

Qualia refers to the perception of colors. In this sense, the new score seeks to integrate color into each of its sections, or musical and poetic gardens, as part of the perception of the work.

José María Sánchez-Verdú (Algeciras, 1968) has enjoyed a prolific career as a composer. Winner of the National Music Prize in 2003, he has received, among other accolades, the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize, the most prestigious music award in Germany. His stage works have been performed by the Staatsoper and the Deutsche Oper Berlin, as well as at the Munich and Venice Biennales. Lincoln Center in New York and the Berlin Philharmonie are among the venues where his symphonic compositions have been heard.

This event, which inaugurates the III Festival del Mediterrani, also pays tribute to Robert Schumann on the bicentenary of his birth. The Palau de les Arts' resident orchestra and pianist Javier Perianes as soloist will perform the German composer's only piano concerto.
