Valencia (22.6.11).- Plácido Domingo, leading the Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana, will conduct The Telephone and Amelia al ballo by Gian Carlo Menotti on July 13 and 14 at the Teatre Martín i Soler of the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía.
The Centre de Perfeccionament, promoted by the tenor and conductor, joins the celebrations of the centenary of Menotti's birth with this double program.
Gian Carlo Menotti was one of the most beloved musicians of the 20th century. Among his extensive operatic works is Goya, a piece he composed specifically for Plácido Domingo, who premiered it to great acclaim in 1986 at the Washington Opera.
Jean-Louis Grinda from Monaco is the author of the staging of these two new productions, whose casts are made up of singers from the Centre de Perfeccionament Plácido Domingo, Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist Program, Washington National Opera and Operalia.
The Telephone (1947) is set in the first half of the 20th century and addresses the challenges of communication in a world increasingly reliant on technology. The protagonists are two lovers and a telephone ( The Telephone, or L'amour à trois , was the composer's subtitle). The work was a Broadway hit, running for over 200 performances between 1947 and 1948.
The origins of Amelia al ballo (Amelia Goes to the Ball) date back to 1933. The plot of this one-act comic opera is set in Milan, also at the beginning of the 20th century. Amelia is a wealthy and capricious young woman who desperately wants to attend the first ball of the season. Her obsession leads to a series of entanglements and misunderstandings, from which she ultimately emerges victorious.
Tickets for this double bill are priced at a single rate of 50 euros. Those interested can purchase their tickets through the usual sales channels: the Palau de les Arts box office, the website www.lesarts.com, or by calling 902-202-383.
