Valencia (3-2-2012).- The Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana visits Castellón, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Santa Cruz de Tenerife this February with maestro Zubin Mehta as musical director.
The president of the Festival del Mediterrani, who is currently directing Don Giovanni, his first Mozart in Valencia, is embarking on a new tour with the resident orchestra of the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía.
The Auditori de Castelló is the first stop on the OCV tour, where Zubin Mehta will premiere César Cano's Concerto for Orchestra, Opus 73, on February 10. The piece was commissioned by the Castellón Philharmonic Society in 2008 to commemorate its 85th anniversary and its 1,000th concert. The score is dedicated to the Castellón Philharmonic Society and its president, Miguel Ángel Trilles. Anton Bruckner's monumental Eighth Symphony, by one of Maestro Mehta's favorite composers, completes the evening's program. The resident orchestra of the Palau de les Arts will perform this same repertoire at the Auditori of the Valencian arts center the following day.
Canary Islands Music Festival
The Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana will travel to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Santa Cruz de Tenerife to perform at the XXVIII Festival de Música de Canarias.
With Zubin Mehta on the podium, the OCV will perform Bruckner's Eighth Symphony at the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium in Gran Canaria on February 13, a performance that will be repeated on the 14th at the Adán Martín Auditorium in Tenerife.
The Canary Islands Music Festival, the only event on the music circuit held in winter, has hosted the world's best orchestras since its inception, as well as leading conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Riccardo Muti, Daniel Barenboim, Colin Davis, John Eliot Gardiner, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Simon Rattle, Christian Thielemann, André Previn, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Riccardo Chailly, Bernard Haitink, Mariss Jansons, and the late Carlo Maria Giulini, Václav Neumann, Sergiu Celibidache and Georg Solti.
New tour with Zubin Mehta
With his visits to Castellón and the Canary Islands, Zubin Mehta concludes another tour with the resident orchestra of the Palau de les Arts. The Indian conductor accompanied the OCV to Santiago de Compostela in 2010 as part of the Xacobeo Classics program. That same year, Maestro Mehta conducted the orchestra for its Madrid debut at the National Auditorium.
Under his direction, the OCV has given performances at national events such as Peralada and the Granada International Festival of Music and Dance, as well as in Italy, at the Ravenna Festival and Armonie d'Arte in Calabria.
