Valencia. The Centre de Perfeccionament Plácido Domingo is finalizing rehearsals this week for L'incoronazione di Dario by Antonio Vivaldi, the work with which the latest class of artists from this project based at the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía will be presented.

The Teatre Martín i Soler will host the Spanish premiere of this work by the Italian composer on December 14th, in a new production with stage direction by Davide Livermore, artistic director of the Centre de Perfeccionament, and musical direction by Federico Maria Sardelli.

Davide Livermore presents Vivaldi's L'incoronazione di Dario , his first production for the Centre and his third for the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía, following his successes with Puccini's La Bohème and Verdi's Otello . The Turin-born singer, teacher, and director advocates for a staging reminiscent of off-Broadway theatre to highlight the acting work of the Centre de Perfeccionament's artists.

“It is a miracle that we have the opportunity at this moment to present a new production on the stage of the Teatre Martín i Soler with a title that is both so precious and a rarity in the operatic repertoire. This production delves into the interpretive and interactive abilities of the artists from the Centre de Perfeccionament, supported by the excellent work of the Ballet de la Generalitat, with whom we are collaborating for the first time.”

Vivaldi's L'incoronazione di Dario is a production of the Valencian arts center, with set design by Manuel Zuriaga, lighting by Antonio Castro, and the participation of the Ballet de la Generalitat. The technical and stage design of this work is the responsibility of the Palau de les Arts technical team.

The musical direction is in the hands of Federico Maria Sardelli, one of the leading figures in the revival of Antonio Vivaldi's work. The composer, musicologist, and flautist boasts a repertoire that includes recordings of the Venetian composer's works such as Arsilda, regina di Ponto , Orlando Furioso , Tito Manlio , Motezuma , and L'Atenaide . As a researcher, he has published numerous essays on Vivaldi's work, as well as critical editions. Founder of the baroque orchestra Modo Antiquo, Sardelli has been nominated twice for Grammy Awards.

The Italian musician makes his debut leading the Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana with this title, which also represents the first Vivaldi opera for the resident orchestra of the Palau de les Arts.

For Sardelli, L'incoronazione di Dario is “one of Vivaldi's most beautiful operas.” “It is the pinnacle of his artistic maturity,” the musical director emphasizes, “a collection of beautiful music, arias full of inventiveness and imagination with a wide range of timbres. It is a very unique opera, rarely performed, and it is an honor for me to conduct its Spanish premiere.”

The artists of the Center de Perfectionament make up the cast of this production, with Valentino Buzza and David Astorga in the role of Dario, Cristina Alunno (Statira), Germán Olvera and Francesco Salvadori (Niceno), Chiara Osella (Argene), Federica Alfano and Hyekyung Choi (Alinda), Irina Levian (Oronte), Anabel Pérez Real and Jinkyung Park (Arpago) and María Kosenkova (Flora).

L'incoronazione di Dario is an opera in three acts with music by Antonio Vivaldi and an Italian libretto by Adriano Morselli. It premiered at the Teatro Sant'Angelo in Venice on January 23, 1717. It is one of the Venetian composer's least performed works, with its last staging to date taking place in 2008 at the Garsington Opera House in Great Britain.

Vivaldi's L'incoronazione di Dario will be performed on December 14, 16, and 19. The performance on the 16th is an educational one. The Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía has set a single price of 35 euros for the performances on the 14th and 19th, with the usual discounts available.
