Valencia. Tenor Andrea Bocelli is recording a new version of Puccini's Turandot at the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía, with Zubin Mehta as musical director, in which he will play the role of Calaf.

The tenor and pop music star, with more than 70 million records sold throughout his career, has chosen the Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana for the second time to record one of his albums, which will also once again feature the Cor de la Generalitat.

The resident orchestra of the Palau de les Arts boasts a discography featuring recordings with great figures of world opera such as Plácido Domingo, the Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Flórez, the Russian soprano Anna Netrebko, the Uruguayan baritone Erwin Schrott or the Polish soprano Aleksandra Kurzak, among other performers.

Zubin Mehta thus made his first recording with the Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana. His recording of Puccini's Turandot , with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, featuring Joan Sutherland, Luciano Pavarotti, and Montserrat Caballé, released in 1972, remains to this day one of the essential pieces in the Puccini repertoire.

In the realm of videography, the Bombay-born conductor is responsible for most of the hits in the Palau de les Arts catalog on DVD and Blu-ray. In addition to Turandot (in 2008), the Indian maestro has been the musical director of landmark productions such as the multi-award-winning Der Ring des Nibelungen ( The Ring of the Nibelung ), Beethoven's Fidelio , and, more recently, Verdi's Otello .

The cast of this new version of Turandot features prominent performers who have previously worked with Zubin Mehta at the Valencian cultural center. This includes American actress Jennifer Wilson ( Der Ring des Nibelungen , Fidelio , and Tristan und Isolde ), and Italian actress Jessica Nuccio ( La Traviata and Turandot ) and the Ukrainian Alexander Tsymbalyuk ( Turandot ) are among the artists returning. Also performing again are the Indian musician, Javier Agulló from Valencia, Pablo García López from Córdoba, and artists Germán Olvera and Valentino Buzza from the Centre de Perfeccionament Plácido Domingo.
