Valencia. The Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía has announced that tenor Gregory Kunde will replace Javier Camarena in Rossini's Stabat Mater this Friday, April 10, at the Auditori. Camarena has cancelled his debut at the Valencian arts center due to a viral infection that requires him to rest for the next few days.
Gregory Kunde, star of the recent Palau de les Arts hits Otello and La forza del destino , gives his first concert at the Valencian opera house. An expert Rossini interpreter, Gregory Kunde also boasts an extensive discography dedicated to the composer from Pesaro. He is also the only tenor, since recordings began, to have sung Verdi's and Rossini's Otello in the same season.
The American singer joins the rehearsals tomorrow for Rossini's Stabat Mater , directed by Giacomo Sagripanti, with Italian soprano Erika Grimaldi, Armenian mezzo-soprano Varduhi Abrahamyan, Chinese bass Liang Li, the Cor de la Generalitat and the Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana.
Sagripanti, 32, is one of the most promising conductors in the Italian repertoire, with work at the Semperoper in Dresden, the Bolshoi in Moscow, La Fenice in Venice, and the Zurich Opera, among others. The young maestro, making his debut at the Palau de les Arts, has recently garnered critical and popular acclaim for his Rossini performances at the Pesaro Festival ( Il barbiere di Siviglia ) and at the Paris Opera ( La Cenerentola ).
Italian soprano Erika Grimaldi also makes her Valencia debut with Rossini's Stabat Mater , a work she recently sang in Paris and London with Gianandrea Noseda conducting. She is accompanied by Varduhi Abrahamyan, who has successfully performed the role of Adalgisa in Norma alongside Mariella Devia, and bass Liang Li, who returns to the Palau de les Arts where he has sung in Il Trovatore with Zubin Mehta and in Messa da Requiem . by Verdi, with Carlo Maria Rizzi.
