The Canalense Musical Association, winner of the 69th National Band Competition 'City of Cullera', headlines the second day of the 'Bandes a Les Arts 2016' series. This Saturday, June 25, at 12:00 pm, the Auditorium of the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía will host a free concert by 'La Canalense', conducted by José Martínez Colomina.

The program includes pasodobles and zarzuela fragments, as well as some of the works with which the band won first prize in Cullera last April.

The evening begins with the pasodoble 'Suspiros de España' by Álvarez Alonso and the prelude to 'Las bodas de Luis Alonso' by Gerónimo Giménez. This is followed by the pasodoble 'Gloria Ramírez', the fandango from 'Doña Francisquita', and 'Hispania (Fantasía Española)' by Óscar Navarro from Valencia, completing this first part, which will feature performances by dancers Sandra Ruiz Vicente and Elisa Pérez Beltrán.

After the break, the Canalense Musical Association resumes the concert with the pasodoble 'Certamen levantino', by Pascual Marquina, and two works by two contemporary Valencian composers: 'Vasa', by Josep Suñer Oriola, and 'Athenea', by Josep Vicent Egea.

Les Arts reminds everyone that admission to this concert, part of the 'Bandes a Les Arts 2016' series, is free. Tickets will be distributed at the box office until the auditorium reaches capacity.

Canalense Musical Association

The origins of the Canalense Musical Association date back to 1946, with the arrival of maestro Joaquín Sellés in Canals to found a musical band with the support of the town council. That same year, the music school began operating, and two years later, on the occasion of Saint Cecilia's Day, the band's first official performance took place.

It was in 1968 that this band ceased to be a municipal band and, six years later, became the Canalense Musical Association. Throughout the association's history, several directors have led it, including José Perales Ferre, Carlos Revert, and Luis Pedrón Francés, but since 2005 it has been directed by José Martínez Colomina, professor of trumpet at the Castellón Higher Conservatory and a regular collaborator with the Valencia Symphony Orchestra and the Instrumental Group.

The musical society includes the band, another youth band, the renowned Cor Calixtí choir, and the music school, which today has 17 teachers and 150 students preparing to become great musicians.
