Mezzo-soprano Elena Zhidkova and tenor Nikolai Schukoff will sing “Das Lied von der Erde” by Gustav Mahler in the concert directed by George Pehlivanian, next April 6 at the Auditori of the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía.
The Palau de les Arts brings together two outstanding performers who have received public applause in Valencia for this masterpiece by Mahler, an author who has also achieved the highest level of excellence from the Valencian Community Orchestra.
“Das Lied von der Erde” (The Song of the Earth) is one of the last works that the Austrian genius will complete. It will be written one year after the death of the mother of Maria (1907) and three years after her death, the score is a monumental symphony consisting of six conceited movements with independent songs.
Elena Zhidkova made her debut at the Palau de les Arts in 2014 with Bartók's "El castell de Barbablava," under the baton of Henrik Nánási. The mezzo-soprano from St. Petersburg is a renowned performer who has participated in prestigious festivals such as Bayreuth, Edinburgh, and the Salzburg Easter Festival, and has been conducted by figures such as Claudio Abbado, Gustavo Dudamel, Valery Gergiev, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Kent Nagano, and Myung Whun Chung.
Nikolai Schukoff, for his band, will sing for the first time at the Palau de les Arts in the new production of “Salomé”, which will inaugurate the III Mediterrani Festival, with Zubin Mehta as musical director and Francisco Negrín as stage manager. In later seasons, the Austrian tenor has been part of the repartiments of “Borís Godunov”, by Mussorgsky; “Ariadne auf Naxos”, by Strauss, and “Die Walküre”, by Wagner, in the multi-premiat muntatge of La Fura dels Baus under the baton of Zubin Mehta.
The program of this concert is complete with the Spanish premiere of “Mural”, by Francisco Coll, a performance by the Luxembourg Philharmonic, the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía.
