The Palau de les Arts has received 111 applications from artists of 29 different nationalities to apply for the selection process for the next course at the Centre de Perfeccionament Plácido Domingo.

The arts center hosts from May 11 to 17 the three phases into which the auditions are divided in this call, from which the students of the tenth promotion of this project will be chosen.

By country, Spain leads the number of applicants with 25 artists, 7 of whom are from Valencia. Brazil and Mexico follow with 9 candidates each; Italy with 8 artists; South Korea and Russia with 6; and Colombia, France, and Ukraine with 5 singers each. Europe accounts for more than 50% of the applications, followed by the Americas with 38 young artists.

The candidates who have been admitted will face an elimination phase through an audition on May 11, 12, and 13. For this purpose, they must prepare five pieces: an aria by Mozart, an aria in Italian, an aria in a language other than Italian, a zarzuela romanza (a Baroque opera aria for countertenors), and a piece from the sacred or chamber music repertoire.

Following the elimination round, on May 14 and 15, the semifinalists will have to audition again, performing one or two arias chosen by the jury from the submitted repertoire, and sight-read a score. The exercise will be completed with a personal interview.

The candidates who pass this phase will advance to the final, which will take place on May 17, with Plácido Domingo as president of a jury made up of prominent figures from the world of opera.

Following the success of previous editions, Les Arts will once again open this final test to the public, in which the singers who will enter the Centre de Perfeccionament will be decided.

The selected participants will also prepare concerts and collaborate on the productions of the 2018-2019 season at Les Arts.

The course, which will begin on September 7 and end on July 26, 2019, also includes master classes from leading professionals such as Plácido Domingo himself, among others.
