Plácido Domingo closes the Palau de les Arts' symphonic program for 2018 with two concerts in the Auditori, both in his roles as singer and conductor.
On Wednesday, December 19, with tickets sold out since September, Plácido Domingo, along with soprano Irina Lungu and artists from the Centre de Perfeccionament Camila Titinger and Vicent Romero, will perform opera and zarzuela pieces.
Les Arts announces that Ana María Martínez has cancelled her appearance in Valencia due to personal circumstances. In her place, soprano Irina Lungu will sing alongside Plácido Domingo. A regular guest at the most prestigious theaters and festivals, the Russian singer will make her debut at the Valencian arts center with this concert.
Óliver Díaz takes over the musical direction of the lyrical evening, which marks the third appearance of the Oviedo-born maestro on the podium of Les Arts, where he has conducted the Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana in the ballet 'Don Quixote' and in 'El Gato Montés' by Penella on previous occasions.
The concert repertoire includes, for the first part, arias and duets by Verdi ('Nabucco', 'La traviata' and 'Il trovatore'), by Puccini ('Manon Lescaut' and 'La Bohème'), by Giordano ('Andrea Chénier'), as well as pieces from French opera ('Faust', 'Roméo et Juliette' and 'Les pêcheurs de perles').
After the break, the program will be entirely dedicated to zarzuela, with romances and other passages on the music stand from titles such as 'Los gavilanes' by Guerrero, 'La Torre del Oro' by Giménez, 'La del manojo de rosas' by Sorozábal, 'El niño judío' and 'La pícara molinera' by Luna, along with 'Maravilla' by Moreno Torroba and 'Marina' by Arrieta.
Three days later, on December 22, at the Auditori, Plácido Domingo concludes his presence at the arts center for 2018 by conducting a lyrical-symphonic event in which the singers of the Centre de Perfeccionament, the Cor de la Generalitat and the Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana participate.
On the music stand are works of special relevance during the Christmas period: Tchaikovsky's 'The Nutcracker' suite, Borodin's 'Polovtsian Dances from Prince Igor', as well as a selection of fragments from Johann Strauss's operetta 'Die Fledermaus' ('The Bat'), with which the Viennese musical tradition bids farewell to the year that ends every night of December 31.
Plácido Domingo will return to Valencia on March 30, 2019, to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Centre de Perfeccionament de Artistas (Center for Advanced Artist Training), which he himself promotes and which is based at Les Arts. Once again, from the podium, he will present some of the most promising professionals who have trained at Valencian theater: Maite Alberola, Nozomi Kato, Pablo García López, and Germán Olvera.
