Valencia (18.10.20). The Palau de les Arts, through 'Les Arts és Educació', is promoting the first program to share the experience of creating an opera company among educational centers in the EU under the acronym DIWO, Do It With Others, Do It With Opera.
Les Arts, in coordination with the CEFIRE of Xàtiva, has launched this experience which is co-financed by the EU within the activities included in the 'Erasmus+' program and which is inspired by the same premise as the LÓVA project (Opera as a Learning Vehicle): that a class dedicates the school year to becoming a company that creates, produces and premieres its own opera.
Working in teams like industry professionals, the students will receive the necessary support to develop their opera production. Among the various tasks they will undertake are writing the libretto, designing sets and lighting, composing the music, creating costumes and props, as well as handling publicity and production financing.
Understanding the inner workings of an opera house and working as a team gives the classroom a new dimension that generates challenges and work dynamics in which, above all, the teaching of values and the cohesion of the integrated group prevails, in the case of DIWO, made up of members from different countries.
The creation of an opera is the central theme that facilitates and gives meaning to the activity. The project's success will depend on the cooperation and learning among students, teachers, and institutions, and in its first edition, it will take place in seven educational centers across five European Union countries.
Values and skills
DIWO pursues several of the main objectives set by the 'Erasmus+' program, such as encouraging young people to participate in the democratic life of Europe, promoting cooperation and mobility between EU partner countries, and reducing school dropout rates, among others.
To that end, the creation of an opera company in the classroom allows teachers to turn the school into a space for discovery, where values and skills such as confidence, delegation of responsibilities, empowerment and learning through individual and collective challenges are developed.
Furthermore, DIWO will allow for the international adoption of a training and learning model that fosters the growth and consolidation of the arts within the school curriculum. At the same time, it facilitates mobility among education professionals from participating countries.
DIWO Calendar
A total of 200 students from schools in Spain, Greece, Italy, Portugal, and Turkey will participate in the first edition of DIWO. Following health recommendations, online training for the 16 teachers involved in the 24-month project will begin this October.
The success of the project will depend on the cooperation between teachers and institutions that have already implemented it (through LÓVA in Spain) and teachers, schools, students and European institutions that are experiencing it for the first time.
