Valencia (04.03.21). The Palau de les Arts premieres this Sunday, March 7, its first opera in a theater in the province of Alicante with the performance offered by the artists of the Centre de Perfeccionament at the Teatro Calderón in Alcoy of 'L'isola disabitata', by Manuel García.

With pianist Carlos Sanchis providing musical accompaniment, Larisa Stefan (Costanza), Evgeniya Khomutova (Silvia), Jorge Franco (Gernando) and Max Hochmuth (Enrico) perform this production from the Arriaga Theatre in Bilbao and the Maestranza Theatre in Seville, with stage direction by Emilio Sagi, set design by Daniel Bianco, costumes by Pepa Ojanguren and lighting by Albert Faura.

The Valencian Capital of Culture for 2021 concludes its seven-performance run of Manuel García's 'L'isola disabitata' after five shows at the Teatre Martín i Soler and one performance at the Teatre Principal in Castelló. This is the first production in the history of theater to be performed in all three provinces of the Valencian Community, with the exception of the 'Les Arts Volant' traveling theater tour.

'L'isola disabitata' is one of the five operas that Manuel García wrote for his students. The Spanish singer, impresario, composer, and singing teacher was one of the great figures of 19th-century cultural life, whose work Les Arts has revived for public consumption with this opera.

“The work, which lasts an hour and a half, contains arias, duets and passages of great virtuosity and beauty, which evoke the reference composers of the time such as Bellini, Rossini or Donizetti,” highlighted Jesús Iglesias Noriega, artistic director of Les Arts.

Core programming

The commitment to extending the activities of Les Arts beyond the immediate vicinity of the building, as Jesús Iglesias Noriega points out, is part of the regional vision of the artistic project for the theater.

“The physical location of Les Arts in the city of Valencia is no obstacle to developing a comprehensive and accessible program for all citizens. Beyond technological possibilities, traveling initiatives such as 'Les Arts amb tu' and 'Les Arts Volant' allow us to showcase our artistic excellence through the incomparable experience of live performance,” he noted.

In this regard, Iglesias Noriega recalled how, after the lockdown, Les Arts, together with the Generalitat's Department of Culture, launched an intense artistic tour of the capitals of the Valencian regions with five performances of 'Les Arts Volant', nine recitals by the Centre de Perfeccionament and six chamber concerts and two symphonic concerts by the Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana.
