Valencia (March 24, 2022). The Valencian Institute of Culture and Les Arts continue their collaboration at the Valencia Film Library with a screening of Roman Polanski's 'Macbeth' (1971) on Friday, March 25, at 8:00 p.m. The film will be shown again on Saturday, March 26, at 6:00 p.m.

Following the screening in February of 'Hamlet' (1964) by the Russian Grigori Kozintev, the Filmoteca continues to screen film adaptations of the works of William Shakespeare directed by great European filmmakers.

In March, the Filmoteca will screen the film version of 'Macbeth' that Roman Polanski shot in Wales in 1971, with a cast headed by Jon Finch, Francesca Annis, Martin Shaw and Terence Bayler.

Shakespeare's play tells the story of Macbeth, a valiant Scottish general, who is visited by three witches who prophesy that he will one day be king. Taking advantage of King Duncan's stay at his house, and spurred on by his wife, Macbeth murders him and is proclaimed King of Scotland. However, to maintain his hold on the throne, he is forced to commit further crimes; meanwhile, his wife, overwhelmed by remorse, collapses.

'Macbeth' was the first film Polanski directed after the brutal murder of his wife, Sharon Tate, by Charles Manson's cult. Perhaps for this reason, critics at the time considered that the Polish filmmaker had achieved a catharsis of his personal tragedy in a film that chooses to depict violence explicitly, sparing no blood from the viewer.

Les Arts at La Filmoteca

The 'Les Arts at La Filmoteca' series presents classic films inspired by or connected to operas or musical performances programmed by the Valencian opera house. This time, the film and operatic versions of 'Macbeth' take center stage in the dialogue between Les Arts and La Filmoteca's respective programs.

To coincide with the performance of Giuseppe Verdi's opera 'Macbeth' at Les Arts, the Filmoteca is screening Polanski's film adaptation of Shakespeare's tragedy.

Under the musical direction of the Italian maestro Michele Mariotti and the stage direction of the Australian Benedict Andrews, Giuseppe Verdi's 'Macbeth' will be performed from March 31 to April 10 at the Palau de Les Arts.

The Filmoteca de València concludes the 'Les Arts en la Filmoteca' cycle in April with the screening of 'Woyzeck' (1979) by the German Werner Herzog, coinciding with the performance at Les Arts of the opera 'Wozzeck' by Alban Berg, two unique adaptations of the theatrical work by Georg Büchner.
