Valencia (19.12.22). Les Arts will dedicate its patronage circle to the memory of the legendary Valencian soprano Lucrezia Bori (Valencia, 1887 – New York, 1960).

In anticipation of the 135th anniversary of her birth, the Board of Trustees of Les Arts will name the theater's patronage circle after Lucrezia Bori, in recognition of her figure not only as "the most important Spanish singer of the first half of the 20th century," but also as "a renowned philanthropist and committed patron of the arts and, particularly, of opera."

To that end, as announced by the president of the Board of Trustees of Les Arts, Pablo Font de Mora, a tribute will be paid to him on December 23rd at the tomb where his remains rest in the municipal cemetery of Valencia.

Lucrezia Bori achieved the status of 'first lady' of the Metropolitan Opera in New York, a stage where she reigned from 1912 until her retirement in 1936. In 1935, the Valencian artist was the first woman and performer to be elected to the Board of Trustees and, once retired from the stage, appointed president of the Metropolitan Opera Guild.

The Valencian singer also stood out for her active contribution to philanthropic causes, for which she offered both her renowned talent and her impressive network. Among the numerous charitable initiatives she championed, she is particularly remembered in New York City for the 'Save the Metropolitan' campaign, which saved the legendary American opera company from bankruptcy after the 1929 stock market crash.

Despite her established career in the United States, Lucrezia Bori never forgot her native Valencia. After learning of the effects of the 1957 flood, she gathered the American elite at New York's Town Hall for a gala that raised $50,000, which the city used to build homes for the families affected by the tragedy.

Lucrezia Bori Circle

The Lucrezia Bori Patronage Circle aims to be a meeting point for representatives of the social and cultural fabric within Les Arts' commitment to bringing citizens closer to and raising awareness of its artistic and educational project.

The Board of Trustees of Les Arts thus intends to advance in the implementation of actions to promote the support of civil society for the growth and development of the activities of Les Arts, as well as contribute to the revitalization of the cultural sector in the Valencian Community.
