Valencia (07.06.2023). Acclaimed conductor Fabio Luisi makes his highly anticipated debut at Les Arts with a concert of works by German composer Richard Strauss.
After cancelling his appearance in 2021, the Italian maestro, who has worked with the most prestigious orchestras in the world, will lead the Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana (OCV) for the first time next Thursday, June 8, at the Auditori de Les Arts and also, a day later, on June 9, at the Auditori de Castelló, at 7:30 p.m.
Music director of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, principal conductor of the Danish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, conductor emeritus of the RAI National Symphony Orchestra, principal conductor of the NHK Orchestra in Tokyo and honorary conductor of the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, his hometown, Fabio Luisi is considered one of the great conductors of our time.
The Genoese conductor was scheduled to make his debut at Les Arts during the 2020-2021 season, but had to cancel his participation for personal reasons. Luisi is thus fulfilling his commitment to the Valencian theater and will conduct this evening dedicated to Richard Strauss, where the OCV will perform two of the most interesting works of German post-Romanticism: the 'Metamorphosis' and the 'Alpine Symphony', showcasing his undeniable musical talent.
The first part of this concert will feature 'Metamorphosis', a study for string instruments composed in 1945, a few months before the end of World War II. With a sound similar to an elegy and quoting the funeral march from Beethoven's 'Eroica', this composition is believed to deal with the destruction of Germany, or more specifically Munich—the composer's birthplace—as a result of the war.
Later, the OCV, in its full ensemble, will perform the well-known 'Alpine Symphony' (1915), one of the many symphonic poems that Strauss composed throughout his career, a genre in which the Munich-born composer excelled. This composition is also an example of program music, narrating the journey of mountaineers through the Bavarian Alps from dawn until nightfall.
Ticket prices for the Fabio Luisi and OCV concert range from €30 to €53. Those under 28 can get tickets for the season's symphonic concerts at a special price of €10.
Fabio Luisi
Fabio Luisi, born in Genoa in 1959, is one of the most sought-after conductors in the world. Although the Italian is primarily known for his affinity for Verdi, he is also renowned for his work with Wagner. Luisi is not only a conductor who excels in the symphonic realm, but he also handles the operatic repertoire with remarkable ease.
This mastery led him to hold positions in the past such as music director of the Semperoper and the Staatskapelle Dresden, from 2007 to 2010, and the Zurich Opera and its orchestra from 2010 to 2021. In addition to conducting top-level orchestras, such as the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, from 2005 to 2013, and the Metropolitan Opera of New York, from 2011 to 2017, among others.
Over the years, Luisi has released an extensive discography with the orchestras he has conducted. Among these, his live recordings for Deutsche Grammophon of Wagner's Ring Cycle operas, 'Siegfried' and 'Götterdämmerung', which he conducted at the Met, stand out. These recordings earned him a Grammy Award in 2012 for Best Opera Recording.
