Valencia (17.10.23). The Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana (OCV) will perform works by Mahler and Shostakovich under the direction of the prestigious Sir Mark Elder this Friday, October 20, at the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía, and on Saturday the 21st at the Auditori i Palau de le Congressos in Castelló.
Following his successful debut with the resident companies of Les Arts in 2022, Mark Elder returns for the first concert of the subscription season, which under the heading 'Poetics of Destiny' has as its guiding thread the twilight works of the great composers of the repertoire.
The principal conductor of the Hallé Orchestra of Manchester and principal guest conductor of the Bergen Philharmonic proposes for this double concert a demanding and monumental program that will allow the public to enjoy the brilliant sound and instrumental quality of the OCV.
On the music stand are two works never before performed by the OCV, by two closely linked composers: Gustav Mahler and Dmitri Shostakovich. The resident orchestra of Les Arts will open the evening with the “Adagio” from Mahler’s Symphony No. 10, a score left unfinished due to the composer’s death, of which he only completed the first movement.
In the second half, Mark Elder conducts Dmitri Shostakovich's intense and challenging Fourth Symphony, considered the most Mahlerian of the Russian composer's symphonies. Colossal in its scale, the work, which demands a large orchestra, will bring together 110 musicians on the Auditori stage under the British maestro's baton.
Following the concert at the Auditori this Friday, the Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana and Mark Elder will inaugurate on Saturday the 21st the symphonic cycle that the resident ensemble of Les Arts offers each season at the Auditori i Palau de le Congressos in Castelló.
