'Les Arts és Lied' closes 2023 with the debut of Gerald Finley, one of the best baritones of the moment

  • A Grammy winner, the bass-baritone stands out among critics for the beauty of his timbre, elegant phrasing, and stage presence.
  • Accompanied by Julius Drake, he will combine the German romanticism of Schubert and Schumann with the Anglo-Saxon repertoire and the French 'mélodie'.

Valencia (28.11.23). The 'Lied' cycle at the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía closes its 2023 performance schedule with one of the season's major debuts, that of bass-baritone Gerald Finley, this Sunday, December 3, at 7:00 p.m. in the Main Hall.

Accompanied by pianist Julius Drake, the sought-after singer proposes a select program for his first recital in Valencia, in which he combines the German romanticism of Schubert and Schumann, with songs from the Anglo-Saxon repertoire and pieces of the French 'mélodie'.

A Grammy Award winner, the Canadian artist is a favorite of international critics both for his forays into the main opera houses and festivals on the circuit, and for his intense activity as a soloist in the most prestigious auditoriums and concert halls.

The beauty of his timbre, his elegance in phrasing, together with his stage presence, have elevated Finley among the great stars of 'Lied', particularly for his interpretations of the German repertoire, for which he is compared with true benchmarks such as Christian Gerhaher.

On his first visit to Les Arts, Gerald Finley will dedicate the first part of the recital to two of the great composers of the genre, using the texts of the poet Heinrich Heine as a guiding thread, with a selection from the 'Schwanengesang'. by Franz Schubert, and eight 'Lieder' by Robert Schumann.

After the break, the Canadian singer offers melodies by Henri Duparc such as 'Sérénade' or 'Soupir', followed by songs by Anglo-Saxons such as Benjamin Britten, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Charles Ives and Cole Porter.

Finley and Drake's recent performance with this same program at the 30th Lied Cycle of the CNDM caused a sensation among lovers of the genre and the specialized press.

Tickets for Gerald Finley's first recital at Les Arts are priced between 25 and 37 euros.

Les Arts és Lied

'Les Arts és Lied' brings the best voices of this genre to the Valencian theatre once again this year, which is consolidating itself as one of the main bets of the program.

Following the performances of Lise Davidsen and Gerald Finley, the 2024 agenda includes the first foray into this genre by the highly sought-after operatic diva Ermonela Jaho (February 4), in addition to the return of Andrè Schuen (March 14) with his highly anticipated program with the Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana.

The cycle will close with mezzo-soprano Ekaterina Semenchuk (April 14), who, after her previous performances in Valencia as an opera singer, will present her facet as a 'liederist' at Les Arts.
