Valencia (14.1.23). The Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía closes its 'Grans Veus' cycle this coming Sunday, January 21, with the highly anticipated debut in the Main Hall of Javier Camarena, the record-breaking tenor, with a program dedicated entirely to Francesco Paolo Tosti (1854-1916), the great master of Italian song.
Winner of the Best Male Singer award at the 2021 International Opera Awards and an undisputed star of the bel canto repertoire, he has been dubbed 'The Tenor of Records' by the international press for his impressive feats in the most prestigious opera houses in the world.
Camarena is the only singer in history to have performed encores in three different productions at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, including 'La fille du Régiment' (2019), where he achieved the unparalleled feat of doing so in each of the seven performances in which he appeared. He subsequently repeated this feat with the same opera at the Teatro Real in Madrid, the Liceu in Barcelona, and the Royal Opera House, where he repeated his aria in each of his four performances.
Les Arts presents the highly sought-after tenor as the closing act of its 'Les Arts és Grans Veus' series, a gathering of the most emblematic figures in opera, in which guest artists explore the music that has shaped their careers. For his first performance of the Les Arts season, Javier Camarena has prepared 'Sogno', a project with which he seeks to celebrate the most prolific and popular composer of Italian songs, which, according to Carmena, should be "essential repertoire for tenors."
Accompanied by his regular pianist, the Cuban Ángel Rodríguez, Camarena will combine 'unknown gems' by Francesco Paolo Tosti with his most popular songs, such as 'A vucchella' and 'Marechiare', which were immortalized at the time by the greatest tenors, such as Enrico Caruso, Mario Lanza and Luciano Pavarotti, as well as French and English songs.
A disciple of Saverio Mercadante, Francesco Paolo Tosti was one of the greatest composers of the golden age of flamenco singing. With over 500 songs in his catalog, he is an essential name in recital programs worldwide. Renowned voices such as Tito Schipa, Carlo Bergonzi, Alfredo Kraus, José Carreras, Plácido Domingo, Franco Corelli, Giuseppe D'Stefano, and Renata Tebaldi, in addition to the aforementioned Caruso, Lanza, and Pavarotti, have included his works in their performances and recordings.
