Barbara Hendricks presents The Road To Freedom at the Palau de les Arts, on 16 December 2018. A blues, gospel and Negro spirituals program that the great star of the opera interprets in Valencia, many years after her last visit to this city. An emotional and moving musical tribute that reminds people of the slaves fight for their freedom, the end of the racial segregation and the Civil Rights Movement inspired by Rosa Parks and led by Martin Luther King.

The program includes the most beautiful and representative songs of an obscure age: Down In Mississippi, Dark Was The Night, Glory Hallelujah, Strange Fruit, Amazing Grace, I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free.

Barbara Hendricks was born in the South of the United States of America, during a period of great pain and big hopes in which Black people lived submitted to the unfair laws of the racial segregation. She began singing gospel and Negro spirituals in the church of her father in the rural Arkansas and she witnessed on 4 September 1957, the “Nine of Little Rock” failure to enter in the High School of Little Rock.

She is nowadays the unique goodwill life ambassador of the ACNUR, the United Nations organization for the protection of the Refugees. Since 1987 she has been helping to promote the Human Rights through her commitment with the refugees in all the world.
