GIAN CARLO MENOTTI. ONE HUNDRED YEARS

The Italian composer, Gian Carlo Menotti would have been one hundred years old on July 7th 2011. To celebrate this centenary, the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía and its Centre de Perfeccionament Plácido Domingo is offering a double programme made up by The Telephone and Amelia al ballo, with mise-en-scène by Jean-Louis Grinda and conducted by Plácido Domingo.

With his presence on the stage before the Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana and the singers of the Centre de Perfeccionament, which bears his name, the tenor and conductor of the orchestra, Madrid born Plácido Domingo also joins this homage to the musician who composed the opera Goya specifically for him, which Domingo premiered at The Washington Opera in 1986, it being a success.

Amelia al ballo
Synopsis

The plot of this opera buffa in one act, takes place in Milan at the beginning of the 20th century. Amelia is a young, rich woman. And one that is very fickle! She has decided that she just has to go to the first ball of the season at all costs, and to do so, she is prepared to get around anything that gets in her way. Her husband refuses to accompany her because he suspects that she has a lover. Amelia, without batting an eyelid, confirms that this is true, and that it is her neighbour.

A fierce argument takes place between husband and lover, which Amelia ends by breaking a vase over her husband's head. With the arrival of the police, the situation becomes more complicated. The protagonist blurts out that someone broke in to steal from them and attacked her husband. The police arrest the neighbour accusing him of being the thief. The husband is taken to hospital and Amelia, at last, is free to go to the ball, accompanied by the policeman who was investigating the robbery.
