Hugo Wolf, soul of the Lied
Hugo Wolf (1860-1903) was one of the great Austrian Lieder composers, often mentioned in the same breath with Brahms, Schubert, Schumann, Strauss, and Mahler. His ample catalogue of over 300 compositions for voice and piano bequeathed to the Austrian canon a fascinating reflection of the various states of the human soul. Passion, love, detachedness, suffering, happiness, spirituality, humor, all these are reference points of the vibrant liederistic universe of Hugo Wolf. His numerous hand written compositions, based on poems by the likes of Goethe or Mörike, reach an expressive zenith thanks to the importance he gives the piano, the brilliance he confers to the text, the recitative character of the singing, and the richness of the melodies, all of which spring from the sentimental, at times naive, inspiration of a tormented genius.
The Italian Songbook, arranged between 1890 and 1896, consists of 46 Lieder and is divided into two volumes. The literary source of the work is a collection of anonymous Italian poems translated into German by Paul Heyse. Wolf began composing the pieces in autumn of 1890, abandoning the project for various months before eventually returning to it, to finish the first volume in December, 1891. Published in Mainz in 1892, the first volume contains 22 Lieder. Four years later Wolf published the 24 Lieder which make up the second volume of the opus.
The Italian Songbook is one of Wolf's best collections. In a letter written after the first volume had been finished, the composer expressed his satisfaction with the result of his work, writing, "My Italian songs are the most original and, artistically, the most perfect songs I have ever composed." Almost the entire songbook deals with love themes, although there are also references to religion. In these Lieder, Wolf seems to abandon the philosophic air of his compositions based on Goethe's texts.
Like much of Wolf's other work, The Italian Songbook deals with romantic themes, but it does so with a delicacy and ease not appreciated as readily in other works by the composer. It is as if the Italian origin of the poems - their Mediterranean feel, their roots in a culture in which feelings are shown more openly - had somehow caused Wolf to lose his inhibitions in the creative process. This collection of 46 songs thus possesses a special charm and stylistic unity, fruits of genuine artistic inspiration and the maturity of a true master of the Lied, a composer who knew how to use the expressive capacity of the piano and the human voice with intelligence and sensitivity.
